Brown, a veteran of World War I. After his return to Santa Ana, Mr. Brown partnered with Samuel Harrel to form Harrell & Brown, a funeral business located on the corner of 17th and Sycamore streets.

In the mid-1930s, Emil Wagner purchased Mr. Harrel's share of the business, and both partners recognized the need for a modern facility to serve Santa Ana's community. Thus, in September 1937, the "new" Brown & Wagner Colonial Mortuary was founded, situated just across the street from its previous location.
