At the Upper Rio Grande Animal Society Conour Animal Shelter, our mission is clear - to offer a safe environment for the shelter and care of animals in desperate need. We are committed to preventing cruelty and abuse towards all creatures and fostering the vital bond between companion animals and humans. Through education, media exposure, and readily accessible information and assistance, we strive to nourish this special connection.

Operating hours for the shelter are as follows: 11 am until 4 pm from Tuesday to Friday, and 1:30 pm until 5:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Please note that we are closed on Mondays.

As a registered 501 c (3) non-profit organization, the Upper Rio Grande Animal Society relies on your support. Contributions made are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law (Tax ID# 27-1518094). Attention City of Monte Vista Residents! (Municipal Code - Animal Regulations) For those residing within the Monte Vista city limits, we urge you to take action. Register your dogs! By adopting or reclaiming a dog from the Conour Animal Shelter, you can now conveniently purchase a city dog license. This step simplifies the process of locating you and reuniting you with your beloved furry friend (dog) should they wander. The cost to license your dog is $7.00 per year. Kindly visit the City of Monte Vista to obtain your required license.

The Conour Animal Shelter is powered by a dedicated team of volunteers who tirelessly serve the needs of our dogs. In addition to our hardworking employees, we welcome volunteers who share our passion for caring for these precious animals.

Our caring and compassionate shelter specializes in providing a loving environment for dogs. We directly serve Rio Grande County, Saguache County, and Mineral County. Additionally, we often receive dogs from Alamosa County, Conejos County, and Costilla County. These counties collectively create the spectacular San Luis Valley, spanning 125 miles in length and 65 miles in width. Within this vast region, only two other shelters cater to dogs - one in Alamosa and the other in San Luis.

Just like humans, every dog has a unique story to tell. Our dogs come from every corner of the San Luis Valley, sharing tales of hardship and hope. Homeless, abandoned, abused, neglected, lost, or reluctantly surrendered by their owners - each dog longs for a chance to love and be loved. Presently, our shelter provides a temporary home to over 30 dogs awaiting their forever families. Operating a shelter and crematory comes with substantial costs totaling approximately $180,000 per year. These expenses include wages, facility maintenance, and, most importantly, fulfilling the needs of our beloved dogs. While we do receive a portion of these costs from government support and fees, they fall short of covering our essential operations.
