Mackey-Wilson-Jennings Funeral Home, Inc., established in 1929, holds the distinction of being the oldest African-American Funeral Home in Lagrange, GA. Our founding members, Rev. W.T. Mackey, Gee Wilson, Lerah Wilson Hughley, and Alfred Jennings, built a legacy that will celebrate 100 years of service in 2029. Originally located on Hines Street in Lagrange, the business moved to its present location in the 1940s.
At Mackey-Wilson-Jennings Funeral Home, we are not only committed to serving our families but also to our community outreach programs. We take pride in operating The Alfred Jennings Free Health & Screening Clinic for adults and The Children's Free Clinic, which provides free health exams, birth certificates, and immunization vouchers required for school enrollment of Daycare, kindergarten, and Pre-K students.
Since 2003, under the leadership of Alfred Jennings's daughter, Wanda Jennings, we have continued the tradition of serving the community with Dignity, Honesty & Integrity. Wanda Jennings, a graduate of Howard University, has made significant contributions to various organizations, including Harmony House, a Women's Domestic Violence Shelter, C.H.I.L.I. Community Housing Initiative for Latinos & Immigrants, and the non-profit Bringing the Ages Together. She brings over 30 years of experience in corporate business, education, radio/tv broadcasting, and entrepreneurship.
Our founders, Rev. W.T. Mackey, Gee Wilson, and Lerah Wilson Hughley, played crucial roles in establishing our funeral home and supporting the community. Rev. Mackey served as an area CME minister for several churches, founded the Benevolent Lodge, and built the lodge meeting hall. Gee Wilson, known for his exceptional embalming skills, mentored many in the industry and provided ambulance services to the African American community during the segregation period. Lerah Wilson Hughley, affectionately known as "Miss Lerah," was among the few women who operated a funeral home in the 50s. She gained statewide recognition for her contributions and was named Mortician of the Year by the Georgia Funeral Service Practitioners Association.
Alfred Jennings, who knew from a young age that he wanted to become an embalmer and funeral director, dedicated his life to serving the community. He became a full-time professional in 1952 and later became the owner of the funeral home in 1973. Throughout his life, Alfred Jennings was known for his generosity, supporting individuals, churches, and educational opportunities. He served as treasurer for the American Legion Post 580 and was the first African-American to serve on the Board of Trustees at WellStar West GA. Medical Center.
