Cummings Funeral Service, Inc. is a distinguished funeral home that has been serving the North Country with utmost care and compassion for nearly a century. As a locally owned and operated funeral home, we take great pride in providing exceptional pre-need funeral planning and cremation services to our valued community members.
Established in 1919, Cummings Funeral Service has been a cornerstone of support for families during their most challenging times. We are pleased to serve all faiths and ensure that our services are accessible to everyone, as our facilities are handicap accessible.
Our Watertown location, situated at 214 Sterling Street, Watertown, NY 13601, has been dedicated to serving the Watertown area and Jefferson County since 1933. Meanwhile, our Clayton location, located at 320 John Street, Clayton, NY 13624, has been faithfully catering to the 1000 Islands area and Jefferson County since our establishment.
Under the expert guidance of Walter P. Cummings, the grandson of the founder, Cummings Funeral Service, Inc. has truly stood the test of time. Originally operating as a combination funeral home and furniture store in Clayton, New York, our business has grown and evolved over the past century to focus solely on providing exceptional funeral services.
The rich history of Cummings Funeral Service can be traced back to Walter P. Cummings, Sr., who opened the business on Riverside Drive in Clayton. In 1929, our funeral home transitioned solely to serving funeral needs, and in that same year, we relocated to our current John Street location in Clayton.
In 1933, Walter P. Cummings, Sr. expanded the business by purchasing 212-214 Sterling Street, where the Watertown Funeral Home, known as The Cummings Place, was established. The Cummings Place was operated by Walter and his wife, Nellie Fitzgerald Cummings, both licensed undertakers. In 1949, the business was incorporated to further strengthen its commitment to our community.
Following the passing of Walter P. Cummings, Sr. in 1952, his sons, Walter P. Cummings, Jr., and Charles M. Cummings, continued his legacy. Walter P. Cummings, Jr. acquired his brother's share of the business in 1953 and dedicated himself to its operations until his death in 1979. Today, the reins of this esteemed funeral service are in the capable hands of his son, Walter P. Cummings.
At Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., we take pride in our century-long tradition of caring for families with the highest level of compassion, respect, and professionalism. We understand the importance of honoring your loved ones and strive to make the funeral planning process as smooth and meaningful as possible.
