Nied Funeral Home exemplifies a legacy of unwavering commitment to our communities. Founded in Swissvale in 1908 by August Nied and Margaret Ziegler Nied, their values continue to guide us as we serve with utmost care.

Joe Nied, their son, embarked on an extraordinary journey during World War 1, managing a coalmine on the hill where Woodland Hills West stands today. His dedication led him to attend the renowned Eckles School of Mortuary in Philadelphia in 1920. By 1922, with a genuine passion for his profession, Joe proudly displayed a sign in a real estate office that read "Joe Nied - Undertaker." Shortly after, he established his funeral business in his father's building on Roslyn Street, making due with limited space. It was a time when most funerals were held within the families' homes.

Years rolled on and the need for a dedicated funeral home became apparent. In 1933, the Nied Funeral Home on Washington Street emerged, sculpted from the ground up as the first of its kind in the tri-state area. While skeptics doubted the necessity of such an establishment, Joe Nied envisioned a future where it would prove indispensable. Indeed, the funeral home underwent three expansions, a testament to Joe Nied's foresight.

In the lineage of Joe Nied's descendants, the torch was passed to Joseph Nied Jr., who made his mark with a funeral home on the corners of Rebecca and Swissvale Avenues in Wilkinsburg. Sadly, Joseph Jr.'s life concluded abruptly, leaving behind a legacy that was subsequently sold. Thomas L. Nied, another of Joe's sons, entered the profession in 1948 and faithfully worked alongside his father until Joe's passing in 1962. Thomas went on to retire in 1993, but remained actively involved in the business until October 2000, when he passed away. Today, Charlie Nied, son of Thomas, gracefully carries the mantle, preserving the traditions of the Nied Funeral Home.
